Moderation PDF Print E-mail

All completed Awards undergo a process of moderation, to ensure consistency and quality across the programme.

Stages of Moderation

The portfolio needs to go through these stages of assessment and moderation:

Stage 1 ~ Award Group assessment and recommendation for moderation.  This is the final peer assessment element of the Award.

Stage 2 ~ Award Group Worker checks everything is completed and if satisfied, contacts the Operating Agency (Young Cumbria) to inform them portfolio’s are ready to be submitted.

Stage 3 ~ Internal Moderation co-ordinated by the Operating Agency (Young Cumbria).  For new groups, each portfolio will be moderated using the ‘Internal Moderation Checklist’ for the relevant Award level.  For established groups a ‘random sample’ is selected. Award group workers are required to attend these internal moderation meetings to take part in the moderation process and receive feedback and development points for future groups.

If the moderation meeting is satisfied that the portfolios meet the requirements of the Award:

  • Youth Challenge Award – a request for certificates is submitted to UK Youth along with evidence of the moderation process
  • Youth Achievement Award – portfolios are put forward for External Moderation by ASDAN.

Stage 4 ~ For Youth Achievement Awards only: External Moderation by ASDAN.  These are regional meetings which Young Cumbria attend on behalf of the Participatory Units, however Award Group workers are encouraged to attend should they want to take part and find out more about this stage of the process.
