The cottage and the surrounding countryside is a registered Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Sites of Special Scientific Interest are the best examples of our national heritage of wildlife habitats, geological features and landforms. Some of them are nature reserves managed by English Nature or voluntary conservation bodies, but the protection and management of most sites depends on individual landowners and occupiers. Through the statutory consultation process English Nature can provide advice and financial support.

Over the past century the countryside in England has undergone a major transformation, with the loss of many natural areas to development and through agricultural intensification and afforestation. The remaining areas are often under considerable pressure.

Nature conservation is concerned with wise and sustainable use of our natural resources. We all have a responsibility to see that what remains of our natural heritage is maintained for future generations.

The History of Isthmus Cottage

Isthmus Cottage was the inspiration of Sir John Randles, a Workington Iron Master and MP for Manchester. Built in 1925, it was designed specifically 'for the enjoyment of friends', an oasis for lazy summers and away from it all at weekends, an escape from the busy weeks in the city.

Sir John never intended the cottage to be used as a permanent residence, he wanted it to be used as a holiday centre and so after his death it was left to the National Trust who ensure that this continues.

In 1947 the National Trust leased the cottage to the Cumberland Association of Boys’ Clubs, who have taken on the responsibility for its modernisation and maintenance.

Isthmus Cottage Facilities

The original building, which is fully centrally heated, plus an open fire in the lounge, has sleeping accommodation for eighteen people within four rooms, containing bunks for eight, six, two and two. The bathroom has shower and toilet facilities. Wash basins with hot and cold running water are in all the bedrooms.

The second building has sleeping accommodation for four, with the same facilities as the first building. There is also a drying room, dining room and kitchen. The kitchen has a gas cooker, microwave oven, fridge, freezer and a full range of cooking utensils, cutlery and crockery for 22 people. Heating is by night storage heaters.

The lounge leads onto the verandah, with magnificent views of Derwentwater and the surrounding hills. It contains an open coal fire, though coal is not provided. Fire appliances are in both buildings, and must not be tampered with. Fire exits are clearly marked.
